Prepping to launch into a semester abroad or away? You definitely won't forget your toothbrush, socks, or phone charger, right?

🧳 What to pack

  • Weather-appropriate clothes – New city, new weather! Check what the weather is like in your study abroad city now and and the end of your semester. You might not need a sweatshirt or coat now, but it could be chilly in two months!

  • Check the book lists for your courses – depending on the program you're in, you may be able to buy or rent your books once you get to your study abroad campus but you definitely need to check your course's book lists before departing for your semester abroad. It might be impossible to order the book you need in time once you're on campus, so packing some of your textbooks might be necessary.

  • Passport and important documents – going abroad for a semester? Of course you know you need your passport! What you may also need are a printed and digital copy of your passport, your visa, and your insurance information.

  • Outlet adapters and power banks – you might need an outlet adapter depending on where you go. Pack a universal outlet adapter (or two!) so you're prepared. If you plan to be out-and-about a lot, bringing along a portable charger may be a helpful item to have with you.

  • Shoes you can walk in – you've probably already planned a few of your favorite fits, but make sure you've got a pair of shoes you can explore in. Whether you're walking thousands of steps a day exploring your new city or going on a hiking adventure with friends, the proper footwear will be crucial.

  • Travel backpack or small suitcase – whether it's a weekend trip or a week in the jungle, you probably don't want to drag around your biggest suitcase. Many alumni have said they wished they brought along a backpack or smaller suitcase for these excursions and trips!

📱 What to download

  • Long flight ahead? Be sure to download what you want to read, listen to, or watch before you get to the airport so you're ready to pass the time as you get excited to start your semester abroad!

  • Language translation apps aren't always perfect, but they can be very helpful! You can download the full library of words on your translation app so that, even if you don't have the best service or wifi at the time, you can still quickly translate something using your app.

  • If you're traveling to a big city, check online to see if the city has an official transportation app! Sometimes city-specific apps have the most accurate information to know when a bus is coming or finding the best route to your destination.

❌ What you might not need to pack

  • Lots of snacks – you might want that favorite snack that reminds you of home (bring it!), but you'll probably also discover a local snack that becomes a favorite! Bring a few, but you won't need to dedicate a whole suitcase to snacks.

  • The big shampoo bottles – and the jumbo sizes of other toiletries ... if there's a brand you simply can't do without, pack it in case you can't find it there! But most students are able to buy what they need in-country, saving precious suitcase space.

  • Your whole wardrobe – the extra sweatshirt or raincoat might be a necessity to be prepared for the weather, but you won't need the whole closet! Lots of students find that getting a sweatshirt, tote bag, or other wearable souvenir is a fun way to take home a piece of your experience with you.
